About the school

Students’ involvement in school life is exceptional and many of them hold positions of responsibility and leadership – Ofsted 2010

The School

Highdown was established as a comprehensive school in September 1971 and became a Foundation School in September 2007. Currently, there are 1,450 students on roll from 11 to 18 years of age including a thriving sixth form of just over 300 students.

We continue to place great emphasis on the value to students’ learning of the innovative uses of information and communication technology (ICT).

The school has developed an international reputation and government recognition for outstanding practice in this vitally important area. We are particularly proud that our contribution to the development of ICT in education has been acknowledged by Bill Gates, President of Microsoft, in his book ‘Business @ the Speed of Thought’

“Highdown is a school investing in the future”
– Bill Gates, President of Microsoft

Teaching and Learning

Our reputation is founded upon success in the classroom. Teaching methods appropriate for each individual subject are chosen carefullly and ensure students have the opportunity to experience working as individuals, in groups and as a whole class.

Throughout the school, an exceptional range of enrichment opportunities ensures all studetns, including those with special needs or who are gifted and talented, have personalised learning throughout the school.

Our sixth form provides a significant advantage. The majority of our staff are qualified and experienced in preparing students right up to university standard and bring a wealth of specialist subject knowledge to challenge and extend students of all levels of attainment.
