Gordano School is a large and highly successful 11-18 comprehensive secondary school approximately eight miles outside Bristol. This includes a thriving Sixth Form of over 350 students that is strongly integrated into the school and offers significant opportunities for Post-16 teaching in over 30 courses. We are the sole secondary school serving the popular town of Portishead, and benefit greatly from being a central part of our community.
We view education as something bigger than just academic achievement. We have a record of considerable academic success, but believe that an education should be about preparing young people for their future lives in a complete sense. As well as consistently positive Progress 8 and Level 3 Value Added outcomes at GCSE and A Level respectively we place great emphasis on student leadership, an unparalleled extra-curricular programme and student progression to their next steps in a wide range of academic and vocational routes.
We value our membership of the Lighthouse Schools Partnership, the North Somerset Teaching Alliance and our role as a Teaching School in delivering high quality support and development for colleagues, both new to the profession and more established. Our size allows regular opportunities for progression into leadership roles.
We were judged Outstanding in all categories in our last Ofsted inspection, but, just as importantly, seek to be a very happy school community with a big heart. This has never been more evident than in the last year, where we have been incredibly proud of the response from our brilliant staff, children and families to the Covid pandemic.
From September, an exciting opportunity has arisen to work with our dynamic Pastoral Team. We are seeking an experienced, energetic, creative, and compassionate team leader. We believe that our distinctive approach to pastoral organisation is a cornerstone of the academic success that we enjoy, and we are seeking a House Head who will lead and work with the Pastoral Team.
Working closely with the wider Inclusion Team and outside organisations and agencies, the Head of House will be the ‘lynchpin’ for planning, delivering and coordinating pastoral care to meet the needs of students in their House. They will do this alongside their Assistant Head of House who they will work closely with on a daily basis.
You will be an outstanding practitioner with clear evidence of having worked successfully with a range of students. Your ability to form speedy and warm relationships and command the respect of students will be key, along with your organisation, initiative and energy.
All applications will be considered on merit and there is no current constraint on teaching subject area. We welcome applications from anyone who feels they have the qualities and skills required to take up this role.
The successful candidate will be:
be a very strong classroom teacher with a real commitment to high quality teaching and learning
be able and confident in liaising and collaborating with outside agencies including schools within the wider LSP Trust
may well show evidence of successful middle leadership, and in all cases demonstrate the ability to lead on this crucial area of pastoral provision.
be able to enthuse, engage and motivate students and staff
be a reflective practitioner and always be willing to improve
be a strong team player
be willing to be involved in the extra-curricular life of the school
be up to date on current research and practices on Pastoral Care
be able to form warm and nurturing relationships with staff, students and parents.
