Addington School – Be Part of Our Success!

Addington School is a large all age outstanding special school on the edge of Reading located in Woodley catering for pupils with a wide range of learning disabilities, many of whom also have associated sensory, motor, medical and behavioural needs.

We pride ourselves in our commitment to induction, professional development and on-going support to all of our staff.

An opportunity has arisen for a Communication & AAC Support Assistant to support a total communication approach in all classrooms across the school. Under the direction of the Head of Communication and Literacy you will lead in developing appropriate access and communication for all pupils and be responsible for the assessment and provision of suitable hardware and software. You will develop access and communication approaches to meet the needs of pupils with physical and/or sensory impairments and ensure that new strategies/systems are implemented and maintained. Working alongside support staff you will work with small groups of pupils and will train and support staff in developing their knowledge of devices and approaches through modelling in class.

With previous experience of working with pupils with special needs, you will have excellent communication skills and good knowledge of communication systems (high tech and low tech). You will be keen to stay up-to-date with the latest developments in AAC. Using a non confrontational approach, you will be a good listener, have the ability to problem solve and will have the physical ability to respond to manual handling and/or challenging behaviour. You will be able to support parents in the transfer of communication systems to the home environment and will disseminate good practice amongst staff and parents.
