Founded in 1646, Reading Blue Coat is a leading independent day school of circa 800 pupils from ages 11 to 18. The School is located on a beautiful 46-acre campus in the village of Sonning, just outside Reading.
The School employs more than 180 staff, of whom 50% are academic staff, and provides a stimulating, friendly and supportive atmosphere in which each pupil can realise his or her full intellectual, physical, and creative potential.
An enthusiastic and inspiring Design Technology specialist with outstanding subject knowledge is required from January 2023 to lead this excellent department. You will teach at all stages of the School, including the AQA Design Technology GCSE course and the AQA 3D Product Design A Level syllabus.
The department has a reputation for excellence in teaching and learning and a record of examination success. During summer 2022, 70% of candidates achieved A or A* at A Level, whilst 84% of students gained at least a grade 7 at GCSE level. Design and Technology is very well resourced and popular at the School.
As a member of the department you will be based in our new state-of-the-art Design Technology Centre, fitted with a metalwork shop, a polymer workshop (including a fleet of 3D printers, a CNC machine and a laser cutter), a woodwork shop and our 21st Century library, research and design facility.
You will contribute to the co-curricular offerings of the departments and the wider life of the School, to which your energy, warmth and pastoral instincts will lend themselves.
It is likely that you will hold a degree in Design Engineering or a strongly related discipline and will preferably have qualified teacher status, although the School will accept applicants who are on an accredited programme working towards Qualified Teacher Status. You must be able to teach design technology and product design and should be able to demonstrate vision and leadership attributes.
Reading Blue Coat offers an exceptional working environment and an attractive rewards package, including excellent benefits such as a pension scheme with 8% employer contribution; free meals; extensive staff discounts; tax saving cycle to work and car leasing schemes; free sports and leisure facilities; Employee Assistance Programme; and a strong commitment to professional development.
