Job Description

This job description is to be performed in accordance with the provisions of the School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document and within the range of teachers’ duties as set out in that document.

Job Purpose

To teach pupils within the school with particular responsibility for the general education, pastoral care and welfare of the pupils in their class.  This includes maintaining pupil records, assessment and liaison with parents and other professionals, and to carry out such duties as are reasonably assigned by the Headteacher.

Main Core Duties

  • Plan and prepare courses, schemes of work and individual lessons, appropriate to the needs and interests of pupils.
  • Promote a wide range of teaching and learning styles to enable students of all abilities to be appropriately challenged.
  • Ensure that students work in a positive, stimulating environment where work is displayed and achievements rewarded.
  • Contribute to the whole school cycles of assessment, recording and reporting including Annual Reviews; Academic Reviews and Parents Evenings.
  • Be involved in pastoral care and responsibilities.

Subject Responsibilities

  • Provide a consistently outstanding role model and demonstrate high quality teaching.
  • Promote the effective management of pupil behaviour and safeguard the welfare of pupils and staff.
  • Teach, according to the educational needs and pupils assigned to the class.
  • Monitor, assess and maintain records on pupils’ progress, academic and behavioural, and use these to inform planning and teaching.
  • Supervise the work of any School Support Assistants (SSAs) within the classroom, delegate duties and maintain an ordered classroom.
  • Contribute to meetings, discussions and consultations as necessary.
  • Promote equal opportunities within the school and to represent the school positively.
  • Demonstrate good practice and to be able to support and encourage colleagues.

Pastoral Responsibilities

  • Communicate to students the values, standards and expectations of the school.
  • Contribute to the life of the community according to individual talents and skills, including a willingness to undertake the organisation of extra-curricular activities.
  • Participate in the arrangements made for the supervision and safety of the students between lessons and during unstructured times.
  • Attend scheduled meetings with colleagues and parents and carers.
  • Promote the department and the achievements of the students within the wider community.
  • Ensure that student progress targets inform curriculum planning.
  • Assist with a Pastoral Tutor group programme.

Knowledge, Experience & Skills

  • Previous experience as a Teacher
  • Subject knowledge in English, Art, PSHE or R&E
  • Knowledge of various teaching methods and current education trends and initiatives
  • Monitoring and evaluating teaching and learning
  • Deep understanding of the national curriculum and education requirements
  • Exceptional organisational and communication skills
  • A patient and resilient personality
  • Dedication to pupils and education
  • Confident ICT user
