West Buckland is a school founded in 1858 intended to offer an excellent education based on Christian values.  It stands in nearly 100 acres of grounds, surrounded by farmland, near the western edge of Exmoor.  Its rural location is outstandingly beautiful. The school is now a leading, multi-cultural community for boys and girls across North Devon and beyond.

The school is fully co-educational and has grown considerably in recent years.  In total there are just under 650 boys and girls aged, 3 to 18 years, with 140 in the Sixth Form.  There are also over 140 boarders and, following the substantial investment, there has been an increased demand in this area. The school has its own co-located, Preparatory School and Nursery, with pupils aged 3 to 11.

Academic standards at the school are high and, for many years, West Buckland has been one of the most consistently high-performing schools in the South West at GCSE and A‐level.  Recent performances for A‐level results typically exceed 75% A* to B and 50% A* to A at GCSE. There is considerable emphasis on extracurricular activities at the school, with a focus through five pillars in Outdoor Education/CCF, Performing Arts, Academic Extension, Sport & Service

The English Department comprises of seven members of staff: two full‐time and five part‐time (or equivalent). Teachers in the department are dedicated to making their students’ experience in these subjects a positive one and aim to enthuse and inspire all students, whilst nurturing pupils’ skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening, so that they can achieve their full potential.

Our traditional school motto, ‘Read and Reap’, aptly reflects the importance of reading at the heart of the curriculum; the department has close links with the library, where pupils are given the opportunity to read a wide variety of texts and have regular library lessons.

The department often participate and have success in various writing and speaking competitions including Youth Speaks, the BBC Radio 2 500 words challenge, The Exmoor Society Lucy Perry Literary competitions as well as running in-house creative competitions to inspire our young people. Over the last few years, we have delivered an annual ‘Creative Writing and Illustration’ community outreach project in conjunction with The Park Community School and South Molton Community College. This allows the department to work with gifted writers and artists from the local area to create pieces that are published within an anthology of collected works.  This programme contributed towards the school being shortlisted for ‘Outstanding Community Contribution’ by the Independent Schools’ Awards in 2019. We hope that the successful candidate will be willing to participate in various extracurricular events and activities to promote the department within the local community.

At GCSE level, pupils study the AQA (9 to 1) syllabus and the vast majority of students will take both the English Language and English Literature GCSEs.  The KS3 schemes of work build a foundation of skills and students cover some core GCSE skills and sit AQA KS3 language specimen assessment papers. The school is running A-Level courses in English Language (AQA - specification A) and English Literature (Edexcel).

An increase contact time for English within the curriculum, creates an opportunity to appoint an additional member of staff into the English department. We are seeking to appoint an energetic and enthusiastic teacher of English to help support the teaching and learning initiatives of the Head of English. The post could suit either a newly qualified teacher, or alternatively an experienced teacher looking for a new challenge. It is anticipated that the appointee would have the ability to contribute to the teaching of A-level English Language and/or English Literature.

The position will be either full time or significant part-time. In addition to teaching English, applicants are asked to indicate willingness and ability to teach in other areas for example, careers, PHSE or EPQ.
