Founded in 1646, Reading Blue Coat is a leading independent day school of 820 pupils; 719 boys aged 11 – 18 and 101 girls in the co-educational sixth form. The School is located on a beautiful 46 acre campus in the village of Sonning-on-Thames, just outside Reading.

We are seeking to add a Learning Support Practitioner to our team. This will suit an enthusiastic and inspiring teacher with proven excellence in teaching pupils with specific learning difficulties, both as individuals and in small groups.

The department provides high quality, flexible support, whether short term or more extended, for pupils with additional needs, to help them achieve their individual academic and co-curricular goals.

Candidates should have a breadth of experience in supporting a range of Specific Learning Difficulties, including ADD & executive function difficulties, as well as expertise in selecting and implementing psychometric tests for assessment of specific learning difficulties. The diverse range of additional needs under the care of the department includes Asperger’s; ADD; Dyslexia; Dyspraxia; executive function difficulties; handwriting and fine motor control difficulties; low processing speed; sensory processing disorder; visual processing difficulties; hearing impairment and acute anxiety. Typically, 15-20% of a year group is supported by the department or holds an exam access arrangement.

Your skill set will include:

  • Experience as a Learning Support teacher in a secondary setting offering one to one and small group lessons.
  • Successful participation in the exam access cycle and familiarity with current regulations of the Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) for exam access arrangements.
  • High levels of verbal and written communication with parents and external professionals and the ability to keep concise, accurate records.
  • An eye for detail and interpretation of data.
  • A calm and measured approach to rapidly changing priorities.
  • An ability to work independently with efficiency, on a case load under the direction of the Head of Department.
  • High levels of specialist teaching skills including sensitivity to pupil needs and professional working relationships.
  • An aptitude to work as part of a small and supportive team, in a fast-paced environment.
  • Computer skills, including typing, across a broad range of applications, including but not exclusively Excel, Word, Power Point, SIMs, Everest.
  • You are likely to have attained a post graduate Diploma in Specific Learning Difficulties at Level 5, and preferably at Level 7.

Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) is not an essential requirement of this post.
